Experience matters both personally, and professionally because nursing is holistic. More importantly, it’s not all about religion either. It’s about understanding, and respecting a persons values, morals, dietary habits, and personal preferences. Nonetheless, all too often both nurses and patients suffer from a lack of exposure and experience. Because we know that it is the root of all prejudices.
On the other hand, there’s another piece that aligns with this as well. It’s the fact that either the nurse/caregiver or patient hasn’t seen enough incidences, had enough conversations, or interactions to open their psyche to other cultures. It’s so unfortunate, because often times, it’s a missed opportunity for growth and expansion. Nonetheless, we encourage both our nurses and patients to be open to learning about other cultures. Because, as a nurse you will become well rounded. And, as a patient, you will get exceptional care! After all, it’s a two-way street.
Here’s to experience, growth, and multicultural diversity! 🙂
